Here are 5 Things Every Car Owner Should Have in Their Car

Here are 5 Things Every Car Owner Should Have in Their Car

When you purchase a car, you also take the maintenance & repair responsibilities upon yourself, but it doesn't end there. Your car needs to carry some essential car items & tools that will come in handy if you experience car problems while on the road.

Among other things, we have taken the liberty of picking out the five most essential car items that will keep you covered until the tow truck arrives. Let's get you to a hardware and mechanic store!

  1. Windshield Fluid

The winter air brings with it a lot of cold rain that can settle on your windshield and stick with dirt, obscuring your view of the road. Road sludge and splashes from passerby vehicles can also cause much viewing hindrance. Using water as your wiper fluid in winters is akin to inviting scratches on the glass. That is why your windshield wiper fluid needs to be designed to keep your windshields clear. And as you will need a lot in winters, it's best to keep a fluid backup in your car.

  1. Jumper Cables

Wet or dry-cell batteries both suffer from decreased performance in winters. And while you might think your starter motor is faulty, the issue might be in your battery. If you cannot start your car, you should have a pair of jumper cables on hand to improvise a jump start. Turn your hazard lights on and hail a passing motorist to assist you with jump-starting your car.

  1. Spare Tires & Lug Wrench

Keeping a spare tire is useless without a car jack. New cars come with a car jack, but you have to buy the spare because most makes do not provide it now. Make sure that you maintain your spare as much as you maintain your car tires because you need that spare in a functional condition if one of your tires suffers a puncture. If you have a lug wrench, be sure to check your wheel nuts for a fit. Some models have different lug nuts, so keep a lug key in your trunk too.

  1. First Aid Kit

You never know when ill fate can befall you on black-iced roads. A collision can cause much damage to the car, and you can suffer injuries too. If you can, purchase a readied first aid kit from your local pharmacy or home stores, or you can assemble your own with zinc oxide ointment, medical tape, different sized band-aids, cotton & alcohol swabs, some wound seal, and a neck collar. These kits need checking for their expiry dates to ensure you don't risk your injury to further damage using the expired ointment. Keep the first aid kit under the seats where it is out of the sun's reach.

  1. Reflective Hazard Triangle

Hazard lights can also do the job, but they aren't immediately interpreted on a busy road. Put out a reflective triangle at a suitable distance to allow the passing cars time to maneuver until help arrives for your car. Store the reflective triangle properly in the trunk to avoid getting it damaged.
